Spanish flag

The red and yellow design of the Spanish flag is derived from a flag contest in 1785 organized by Charles III in order to find a flag that was easy to see at sea. It was chosen by Charles III himself  and designed by Antonio Valdés y Bazán.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red, the yellow stripe being twice the size of each red stripe. It also includes a shield in which the crown stands for the Constitutional monarchy and the supporters symbolize the geographic position of Spain. The Pillars of Hercules represent Gibraltar and Ceuta on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar. They display a motto in Latin, "PLUS ULTRA," meaning "More Beyond".
